Waste Categories Guide

Four colours, and what each one is for

This is the shared vocabulary between the app, the reusable bags, the collector's workflow and the dashboard analytics. Learn it once and everything else on the platform follows.
Every category is identified by an icon and a written label as well as a colour, so sorting works for colour-blind users and at low literacy levels.
Green

Recyclables

Materials that can go back into manufacturing. Rinse them, keep them dry, and they hold their value.

Typical items

  • Barcoded plastic bottles and containers
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Metal cans and tins
  • Clean paper and cardboard

What the platform does

Highest reward weighting. Logged items are routed to verified recycling partners and counted toward your CO₂-equivalent savings.

Blue

Food & organic waste

Anything that rots. Kept separate it becomes compost; mixed in, it contaminates everything else in the bag.

Typical items

  • Food scraps and peelings
  • Garden and green cuttings
  • Used tea leaves and coffee grounds

What the platform does

The app returns composting guidance and maps the nearest composting point or collection partner.

Red

Hazardous waste

Items that harm people, soil or water if they reach an ordinary dump. These must go to a licensed handler.

Typical items

  • Batteries and power banks
  • Electronic waste — phones, cables, bulbs
  • Chemicals, paints and solvents
  • Medical sharps and expired medicine

What the platform does

Safety warnings are shown before anything else. Disposal is restricted and the item is routed to a licensed handler — never to a standard pickup.

Yellow

General dry waste

What is left once the other three are taken out. The goal here is to make this bag smaller every month.

Typical items

  • Tissue paper and serviettes
  • Non-recyclable food wraps and sachets
  • Broken ceramics and mixed-material items

What the platform does

Reduction nudges. The app suggests lower-impact alternatives for the items you throw away most often.

Where do clothes go?

Textiles are not a fifth colour. A garment can end its life as something reusable, repairable, recyclable fibre, or ordinary waste — so the Textile Tracker decides its route item by item.

Why the categories are weighted

Not every correct sort is worth the same

Eco-points are weighted by category impact. Recyclables carry the highest weighting because they retain the most value when kept clean and separate; general dry waste carries the least, because the goal there is for the bag to shrink.

The sorting kit

The reusable sorting kit

Four reusable bags, one per category, printed with the same icon and colour the app uses. Distributed free to households, schools and estates joining the programme.

  • The bag, the app screen, the collector's scanner and the dashboard all use one colour code — so nothing is lost between them.
  • Printed with icons and words, not colour alone, so the kit works for colour-blind users and at low literacy levels.
  • Reusable by design. A programme about waste should not hand out disposable bags.
  • Distributed alongside the community training session, so the kit arrives with the explanation rather than ahead of it.

Print it and put it on a wall

The sorting kit only works if the guide is where the decision happens — by the bin, not in an app you have to open.
